The Catholic Community of the Beatitudes is one of the "New Communities" born in the Catholic Church after Vatican II in the movement of the Charismatic Renewal. It was founded in France in 1973, and became under the ecclesial authority of the Archbishop of Albi (France) since May 1975 (Foundation in Cordes). It was recognized in 2002 by the Pontifical Right.

On December 3, 2008, the Pontifical Council for the Laity asked the Community to shift to the canonical form of a New Spiritual Family of Consecrated Life (under the pontifical authority of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life): "This canonical structure, which belongs to the new forms of consecrated life, will allow each state of life to participate in the charism and spirituality of the Community in a new way, at the same time preserving its unity". Situated in the charismatic renewal movement, the Community gathered so far in local groups, priests, nuns and singles (consecrated or not) as well as married couples. Its spirituality is Eucharistic and Marian, inspired by the Carmelite tradition and living out the spirit of the Beatitudes . It gathers together the faithful of all states of life (families, single people, priests and consecrated brothers and sisters), who share in common a vocation of prayer and fraternal communion, combining a marked contemplative dimension (adoration of the Blessed Sacrament) with numerous apostolic and missionary activities (parishes, hospital and health care, Marian sanctuaries, retreat centers, taking care of the poor, contemplative houses, etc). In recent years, the Community has been the subject of complaints in justice and judicial investigations showing cultic aspects. The MIVILUDES asked the prefect of Haute-Garonne to check the legality of voluntary work . For his part, national secretary of French episcopate for the study of cults and new religious movements and also member of the CCMM, denied these accusations.

Fin 2008, Rome a toutefois suspendu le processus de reconnaissance de cette communauté par le Conseil pontifical pour les laïcs, la renvoyant à l'autorité diocésaine et au Dicastère romain en charge des religieux, exigeant entre autres l'abandon de la mixité « qui pourrait générer confusion et favoriser des liens affectifs désordonnés ». Située dans la mouvance du renouveau charismatique, la communauté rassemblait jusqu'alors, au sein de groupes locaux, des prêtres, des religieuses et des célibataires (consacrés ou non) ainsi que des couples mariés. Sa spécificité tenait notamment à son attachement à des rituels inspirés du judaïsme, mais aussi, dans quelques maisons, à des séances de psychothérapie et à diverses pratiques auxquelles l'Église catholique a mis fin. Ces dernières années, la communauté a été l’objet de plaintes en justice et d'enquêtes judiciaires faisant état de dérives sectaires. La Miviludes, notamment, aurait saisi le préfet de Haute-Garonne pour vérifier la légalité du travail bénévole. Depuis le début de l'année 2009, les Béatitudes sont en phase de restructuration pendant que la justice suit son cours, notamment en ce qui concerne les affaires de pédophilie et de suicides d'adolescents liées à la communauté et des plaintes en diffamation en réponse à ces affaires.
