Erst als die Supermarktkette Aldi Restposten der Modelle C16, C116 und Plus/4 für damals wenig Geld verkaufte, konnten auch in Deutschland noch einige wenige User hinzugewonnen werden. Unklar blieb, ob der Plus/4 beziehungsweise die gesamte Baureihe 264 den C64 ersetzen sollte oder als Erweiterung der Modellpalette für „seriöse“ Anwender gedacht war, die den Computer weniger zum Spielen als vielmehr zum Arbeiten einsetzen.

W odróżnieniu od Commodore 16 i Commodore 116, Plus/4 posiadał 64 KB RAM-u, miał także możliwość podłączenia dedykowanej dla niego stacji dyskietek Commodore 1551, działającej - dzięki połączeniu przez port równoległy - ok. trzy do pięciu razy szybciej niż stosowana z innymi modelami komputerów Commodore stacja Commodore 1541. Komputer ten wyposażony był w 1-kanałowy generator dźwięku o nazwie "TED". W kwestii dźwięku zdecydowanie ustępował C64, zyskał za to dodatkową paletę kolorów (C64 dysponował paletą 16 barw, rodzina C16/116/+4 miała ich już 128 - w efekcie było nadal 16 kolorów oraz 8 poziomów luminacji dla każdego z nich). Komputer wyposażony był w znacznie bardziej rozbudowaną wersję języka Basic (3.5). Dzięki niej oraz zmianie adresowania pamięci, użytkownik w Basic-u miał do dyspozycji 60 KB RAM co było dużym skokiem w porównaniu do C64. Firma Commodore popełniła podstawowy błąd - wypuściła komputer niekompatybilny z poprzednikiem oraz poważnie odchudzony (dźwięk). Rynek nie przyjął dobrze odmiany tych komputerów, w następstwie czego powstał model C128, w którym zastosowano architekturę dwuprocesorową, by zachować pełną zgodność z modelem C64.
