- A committee (some of which are titled instead as a "Commission", or other terms discussed below in Official and unofficial types) is a type of small deliberative assembly that is usually intended to remain subordinate to another, larger deliberative assembly—which when organized so that action on committee requires a vote by all its entitled members, is called the "Committee of the Whole". Committees often serve several different functions: Governance: in organizations considered too large for all the members to participate in decisions affecting the organization as a whole, a committee (such as a Board of Directors or "Executive Committee") is given the power to make decisions, spend money, or take actions. Some or all such powers may be limited or effectively unlimited. For example of the later case, the Board of directors can frequently enter into binding contracts and make decisions which once taken or made, can't be taken back or undone under the law. Coordination: individuals from different parts of an organization (for example, all senior vice presidents) might meet regularly to discuss developments in their areas, review projects that cut across organizational boundaries, talk about future options, etc. Where there is a large committee, it is common to have smaller committees with more specialized functions - for example, Boards of Directors of large corporations typically have an (ongoing) audit committee, finance committee, compensation committee, etc. Large academic conferences are usually organized by a co-ordinating committee drawn from the relevant professional body. Research and recommendations: committees are often formed to do research and make recommendations on a potential or planned project or change. For example, an organization considering a major capital investment might create a temporary working committee of several people to review options and make recommendations to upper management or the Board of Directors. Such committees are typically dissolved after issuing recommendations (often in the form of a final report). Project management: while it is generally considered poor management to give operational responsibility to a committee to actually manage a project, this is not unknown. The problem is that no single person can be held accountable for poor performance of the committee, particularly if the chairperson of the committee is seen as a facilitator. - Der Begriff Gremium bezeichnet die Zusammenarbeit von Personen in einer Gruppe, die sich zum Zweck der Beratung über einen speziellen Themenkomplex bzw. der Beschlussfassung über diesen Themenbereich über einen längeren Zeitraum hinweg bildet. Das Wort Gremium geht zurück auf das lateinische Wort gremium, das Schoß, Armvoll, Bündel oder Mitte bedeutet. Der Plural lautet Gremien.
- Komise (z latinského committere, dát dohromady < com-, dohromady + mittere, dát, poslat), archaičtěji též komitét, je byrokratický mechanismus, ve kterém jsou na omezenou skupinu lidí (obvykle jednotky až desítky) převedeny některé rozhodovací či administrativní pravomoci. Některé komise mají striktně vymezený obor působnosti a omezenou dobu existence, jiné komise fungují dlouhodobě či trvale. Přibližným synonymem slova komise je výbor. Rozdíly v použití těchto slov jsou dané etymologicky i zvykově, při překladech jsou často zaměňována. V češtině se častěji jako výbor označují interní sbory, tvořené z členů orgánu, který je zřídil, často s rozhodovací pravomocí, zatímco slovem komise častěji sbory s účastí externích nebo nezávislých osob, někdy jen s poradní funkcí. Toto rozlišení však zdaleka neplatí vždy. Dalšími synonymy slov výbor a komise jsou například rada, koncil, rusismus sovět atd.

Komitean perinteinen työn tulos on mietintö. 1990-luvun lopulta alkaen eri maissa on komiteoiden julkisella rahoituksella toteutettavien hankkeiden edistämistöitä on annettu selvitysmiesten ja viisaiden miesten tai persoonoiden ryhmien kirjoitettavaksi.

Comitês são figuras de organização comuns em entidades de cunho político, como partidos, governos, parlamentos, sindicatos, movimentos sociais, nos quais o poder de decisão é delegado a um grupo que representa os interesses da coletividade, em vez de ser entregue a um único indivíduo. A idéia de comitê difere de uma comissão porque, enquanto esta trata de assuntos e temas específicos e normalmente tem existência por tempo predeterminado, o comitê é um órgão permanente e trabalha gerenciando diversos temas dentro de um grupo. Também difere de conselho por ser, de natureza, um destacamento relativamente pequeno partindo de um grupo maior (o que o conselho não precisa ser necessariamente). Um comitê também pode ser um grupo de sábios e notórios especialistas convocado por uma autoridade maior (como um governo) para tratar de uma questão determinada e impor ou propor soluções. Alguns termos de conotação pejorativa para grupos deliberativos são camarilha, junta e cabala. Nos partidos políticos de ideologia comunista, os comitês são parte fundamental da organização partidária, que se hierarquiza em diferentes níveis, por tema ou por região. Nessas entidades, o órgão de direção máxima partidária é o Comitê central. Nos EUA, o termo "comitê" é usado indiscriminadamente como sinônimo de comissão, embora os dois conceitos guardem as diferenças apontadas acima. As comissões parlamentares temáticas, por exemplo, são denominadas "Comitês do Congresso".
