- The Commissariat à l’énergie atomique or CEA, is a French “public establishment related to industrial and commercial activities” whose mission is to develop all applications of atomic energy, both civilian and military. CEA is headed by the high-commissioner for atomic energy, and by a board headed by the general administrator. The missions of the CEA are equivalent to those of the United States Department of Energy. Its yearly budget amounts to 3.3 billion euros. CEA was created in 1945; since then, the successive high-commissioners have been Frédéric Joliot-Curie, Francis Perrin, Jacques Yvon, Jean Teillac, Robert Dautray, René Pellat, Bernard Bigot and the incumbent. It conducts fundamental and applied research into many areas, including the design of nuclear reactors, the manufacturing of integrated circuits, the use of radionucleides for curing illnesses, seismology and tsunami propagation, the safety of computerized systems, etc. It has one of the top 10 supercomputers in the world, the Tera-10. It is divided into 5 directions, or divisions: the division of nuclear energy; the division of technological research; the division of life sciences; the division of sciences of matter; the division of military applications, which builds the nuclear weapons of the French military and designs the power plants of the nuclear submarines of the French Navy

- Het Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA) is het Franse atoomcommissariaat. Het is een aan de Franse overheid gelieerde instelling voor onderzoek naar nucleaire technologieën en haar toepassingen. De civiele tak van het CEA houdt zich bezig met fundamenteel en toegepast wetenschappelijk onderzoek, alsmede kennistransfer voor industriële doeleinden, zoals micro-elektronica. De militaire tak van het CEA is nauw betrokken bij de ontwikkeling en onderhoud van het Franse kernwapenarsenaal, alsmede het Mégajoule Laserproject, dat simulatie van kernproeven mogelijk maakt. Samen met het Franse energiebedrijf Électricité de France en het Franse nucleaire concern Areva vervult het CEA een belangrijke rol in de Franse atoomindustrie. Het CEA is nauw betrokken geweest bij de ontwikkeling van de kweekreactoren Phénix en Superphénix en de tokamak Tore Supra. Ook op internationaal gebied speelt het CEA een belangrijke rol, ze vertegenwoordigt Frankrijk bij het Internationaal Atoomenergie Agentschap en bij het ITER kernfusieproject. De ITER kernfusiereactor wordt gebouwd op het CEA-terrein in Cadarache.
