The office of Commander-in-Chief, North America was the commander of British forces in North America before 1859. During the majority of this time, the Commander was posted to British fortifications at Halifax, Nova Scotia. The title was passed onto the President of the United States in 1783 for the rebellious colonies and to the Governor General of British North America for the loyal colonies from 1859 to 1875.
