- Comedy rock is a term used to describe rock music that is mixed with satire or other forms of comedy. This tradition can be traced back to the earliest days of rock and roll itself, the most notable early examples being Stan Freberg who lampooned artists such as Elvis Presley and The Platters, and Sheb Wooley whose Purple People Eater hit #1 on the Billboard pop charts in 1958 and stayed there 6 weeks. Some comedy rock artists, such as Frank Zappa, Tenacious D, Green Jelly, and more recently, Flight of the Conchords create songs with amusing, witty, and/or over-the-top lyrics. Other acts such as Dread Zeppelin, Beatallica, and GWAR rely more on gimmicks such as outrageous costumes or mixing genres for comic effect. Many mainstream rock bands are known to incorporate comedy songs in their work: Bloodhound Gang, Blink-182, Bowling For Soup, Reel Big Fish, Sublime, Primus, System of a Down and The Presidents of the United States of America. Rock has been the target of many spoofs and several spoof bands have gone on to have actual hit records, a good example would be The Hee Bee Gee Bees and subsequently Spinal Tap in the U.S. , and Bad News in the U.K.. The most successful parody artist is "Weird Al" Yankovic who is now in his fourth decade of creating song parodies and has sold more than 12 million albums (more than any comedy act in history). Punk rock has made its contribution to the comedy rock ranks, with such bands as Dead Milkmen, The Aquabats and The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. Sid Vicious' covering "My Way" is comedy rock of a more sardonic sort. The band Steel Panther, formerly known as Metal Skool, has become a fixture on LA's Sunset Strip with their spoof of 80's glam metal and their success has opened the doors for other Hollywood spoof bands such as Van Stone and The Jimi Homeless Experience. The virtual band Dethklok is death metal spoof featured in the Adult Swim animated program Metalocalypse and their album entitled The Dethalbum debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 list In Brazil, Mamonas Assassinas sold more than 2 million copies in only 8 months, it's a record. Mamonas Assassinas was, and still is, one of the most famous brazilian bands. In Italy, comedy rock groups are Elio e le Storie Tese, Skiantos and I Vincisgrassi. In Mexico, Botellita de Jeréz self titled "Guacarock" (from guacamole and rock) can be considered comedy rock In Spain, Mojinos Escozíos is one the most famous comedy rock bands. The source of comedy in metal bands is sometimes derrived from putting lyrics in contrast to the aggressive sound, such as pop song covers. Notable bands that use humour in metal are Ten Masked Men, Psyopus and Psychostick.

Toisin kuin monien muiden musiikin lajien, huumorirockin koomisuus on tahallista. Yleensä huumorirock on humoristista sekä musiikillisesti että sanoituksiltaan. Sanoitukset voivat olla melko yksinkertaisia, mutta myös tehdä hienostuneesti pilaa erilaisista rock-maailman kliseistä sekä yhteiskunnan ongelmista. Suomalaisia huumorirockyhtyeitä ovat muun muassa Sleepy Sleepers, Eläkeläiset, Turo's Hevi Gee ja Rehupiikles, Lapinlahden Linnut, Kontra ja Halavatun papat. Tietyssä määrin ryhmään kuuluvat myös Klamydia, Fuckin' Hippies sekä Kaytanhousuja. Kansainvälisesti tunnetuin huumorirock-artisti on todennäköisesti "Weird Al" Yankovic ja tunnetuin kansainvälinen huumorirock yhtye on Tenacious D. Yksi ensimmäisiä merkittäviä tyylilajin edustajia oli Frank Zappa.
- Rock demenziale è un'espressione, coniata nel 1978 da Freak Antoni degli Skiantos che si riferisce all'opera di gruppi e artisti rock o anche Heavy metal i cui testi sono caratterizzati da un certo tipo di comicità estrema e surreale spesso identificato, in diversi contesti, con l'aggettivo demenziale; il tutto strettamente legato, almeno gli inizi del fenomeno, all'esplosione creativa del punk e del Movimento del '77. Per estensione, può indicare musica pop (anche non strettamente rock) con testi apertamente umoristici: ma non essendo necessariamente rock il genere dei cosiddetti artisti "demenziali", sarebbe più corretto utilizzare il termine musica demenziale. La definizione è vaga per diversi motivi: innanzitutto perché il concetto stesso di demenziale è suscettibile di diverse interpretazioni. Se a un estremo dello spettro c'è il fine calembour a scopo ironico o la creatività linguistica, all'altro c'è il semplice uso ostentato di locuzioni scurrili (spesso con coloriture gergali o dialettali). In ogni caso, evidentemente, non sarebbe corretto parlare di rock demenziale come di un "genere musicale", essendo la definizione relativa a differenti stili musicali; tuttavia, quest'uso incongruo dell'espressione è estremamente diffuso, per almeno due motivi: molti gruppi di rock demenziale adottano sonorità simili fra loro, generalmente prossime a quelle del pop rock o del punk rock, contribuendo a creare l'idea del rock demenziale come "genere" musicalmente omogeneo (sebbene non manchino i casi di gruppi etichettati come "rock demenziale" la cui opera spazia su orizzonti musicali molto più vasti, incluse incursioni nel jazz o nella fusion) il "rock demenziale" costituisce un mercato con un proprio segmento di pubblico trasversale e quindi, come in altri casi (per esempio in quello della world music), il "genere" viene definito in funzione del suo mercato. Nei paesi anglosassoni non esiste un genere simile, ma è possibile comunque un accostamento con il "comedy rock", e fra i suoi esponenti possono essere inseriti artisti del calibro di Frank Zappa, la cui vena artistica non solo include dei testi ironici o dissacranti, ma anche veri e propri spettacoli teatrali con differenti generi e stili musicali sapientemente miscelati a scopo parodistico. I testi sono un elemento fondamentale del rock demenziale, e dunque non è raro il caso di artisti che si sono specializzati nel realizzare cover di brani celebri riscrivendone i testi con intento ironico, dissacratore o semplicemente goliardico.
