- The College of Lake County is a comprehensive community college offering a wide range of academic program choices to meet students' educational needs at different points in their lives. Major program areas include credit programs to prepare students for transfer or career entry, GED and adult basic education, non-credit offerings for personal or career development, and contract training and specialized services for businesses. Each semester CLC serves over 16,000 credit students, with more than 80 percent enrolled in transfer or career preparation programs. Located in the far northeastern suburbs of Chicago, the district has a population of almost 650,000 residents, living in more than 50 demographically diverse communities. In a survey of recent graduates, 96 percent of respondents expressed satisfaction with the content of their courses. Those working full time reported an average annual salary of nearly $37,000. In 1967, Sondra Schmidt founded Lake County Community College (LCCC), which was renamed College of Lake County in 1975. Major contributors during the first few years of the College of Lake County were Dr. Brian Wang and Lake County Board Chair Brad Weinberger who both oversaw both the construction and the financing of the project. In 1976, after a push by board of trustee president Peter Klein, the Lakeshore Campus was established in downtown Waukegan to provide overflow space for the College of Lake County in Grayslake. The Lakeshore Campus is (2008-2009) undergoing major renovation and additions. Recently, the College of Lake County established the Southlake Educational Education Center, as of May 2008, officially Southlake Campus, in Vernon Hills, Illinois, and Great Lakes Center on the Great Lakes Naval Base. Both Southlake Campus and Naval Center provide easy access to courses at the their sites. For the convenience of students, CLC may schedule courses at extension sites throughout Lake County. The College as well has improved and expanded registration for all coursework and expanded integration for completing select courses online. A 2006 addition next to the Grayslake campus is the University Center of Lake County, a consortium of four-year colleges offering the opportunity for local residents to complete or add to their education begun at CLC or elsewhere. The Center is not officially part of CLC, but its presence offers a great opportunity for CLC students and other local residents to pursue further education without relocating or commuting a greater distance. Currently, universities with classes offered at the University Center include: Benedictine University Chicago School of Professional Psychology Concordia University Chicago DePaul University Dominican University Governors State University Illinois State University Kendall College National-Louis University North Park University Northeastern Illinois University Northern Illinois University Roosevelt University Saint Xavier University Southern Illinois University at Carbondale University of Illinois at Chicago University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign University of Illinois at Springfield
