- Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, he defied the wishes of his domineering grandfather and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn towards musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike most successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote both the lyrics and the music for his songs. After a serious horseback riding accident in 1937, Porter was left disabled and in constant pain, but he continued to work. His shows of the early 1940s did not contain the lasting hits of his best work of the 1920s and 30s, but in 1947 he made a triumphant comeback with his most successful musical, Kiss Me, Kate. Porter's other musicals include Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady, Anything Goes and Can-Can, and his numerous hit songs include "Night and Day", "I Get a Kick out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!" and "I've Got You Under My Skin". He also composed scores for films from the 1930s to the 1950s. He was noted for his sophisticated, suggestive lyrics, clever rhymes and complex forms.

Door een ongeluk in 1937 werden zijn benen verbrijzeld waardoor hij vrijwel geheel kreupel werd, maar hij bleef componeren. Hij ontmoette Linda Lee Thomas in Parijs in 1918. Zij was een rijke gescheiden vrouw die een aantal jaren ouder was dan hij. Ze trouwden in 1919. Zij werd eens de mooiste vrouw ter wereld genoemd. Porter was homoseksueel, een feit waarvan zijn vrouw blijkbaar op de hoogte was. De Porters verhuisden van Parijs naar Venetië, van daar naar New York en uiteindelijk naar Hollywood, waar het gemakkelijke (grote) geld lokte en waar Cole Porter voor MGM de muziek voor vele films schreef. In die tijd nam de kwaliteit van zijn werk – ook tot zijn eigen ongenoegen – af en mede daarom verliet hij Hollywood weer. Ook het openbaar worden van de homoseksuele relaties naast zijn huwelijk bespoedigde zijn vertrek uit Hollywood. Cole Porter en zijn vrouw gingen (enige tijd) uit elkaar aan het begin van de jaren dertig nadat Porters homoseksualiteit meer en meer openbaar werd toen zij in Hollywood woonden. Zij bleven echter getrouwd en hun – naar de mening van zijn biografen – gelukkige huwelijk duurde tot zijn vrouw overleed in 1954. In 1958 moest zijn rechterbeen geamputeerd worden. Daarna verloor hij zijn levenslust en daarmee zijn creativiteit. Cole Porter overleed in 1964 en ligt begraven tussen zijn vader Sam Porter en zijn vrouw Linda in zijn geboorteplaats.
