  • Cokethorpe School is a co-educational independent school near Ducklington, Witney, Oxfordshire, England, founded in 1957. The school has approximately 660 pupils, ranging in age from four to eighteen. It is the only coeducational day school in Oxfordshire with both Junior and Senior Schools on the same site. Over recent years, its facilities have been greatly increased, with the addition of an information technology centre and with the building of a new teaching block. A new sixth form centre to house the ever expanding sixth form is being built along with a new dining room - due to be opened in September 2009. At the heart of the school is an early 18th century Grade II* listed Queen Anne style country house. The school is set in 150 acres (0.61 km) of parkland and there is also a chapel in the grounds. The tower of the chapel was virtually destroyed in a fire in 1994 but it has since been demolished and rebuilt. Due to expansion much of the school's teaching, creative arts and sporting activities take place in a range of modern buildings, built around a series of courtyards. These new buildings contrast with, the character of the original buildings. The school operates a house system, with houses called Harcourt, Gascoigne, Swift, Queen Anne, Vanbrugh and Feilden, all named after influential persons linked to the school through the ages. The houses compete in sport such as house rugby and football for boys, hockey and netball for girls, and in field and track events at the annual school sports day. There are also competitions in the arts, such as house music, drama, photography and art. Interschool sports fixtures are also regularly held against other schools and colleges in the Oxford area and beyond. In the Michaelmas Term (September to December), rugby and hockey matches are played, in the Lent Term (January to April), football and netball, and in the Summer Term (April to July) tennis, cricket and rounders. There are also many subsidiary sports such as kayaking, lacrosse, badminton and swimming, as part of the extra-curricular programme known as 'AOB'. The school's kayaking team is currently viewed as the strongest school kayaking team in the country at present, winning or ranking highly in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race for the past few years. see http://www. dwrace. org. uk/results/main. html. High-profile sporting successes are frequent and varied, from county to international level and the most talented pupils are considered for the School Sports Academy, designed to enhance the knowledge and performance of those with most sporting ability and potential. The parkland provides ideal playing fields and a 9-hole golf course. In addition, there are two all-weather pitches, a sports hall, fitness suite, climbing tower and a clay-pigeon shoot. The school's first XV rugby team are currently (2008-9 season) County Champions. The school celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary in 2007. There were almost 50 events over the year, including a rugby and hockey tour and geography trip to Sri Lanka, David Cameron appearing as a guest speaker at the School's annual end of year prize giving, and a whole-school Celebration of Advent at the New Theatre, Oxford.
