The CocoaVia line was introduced in 2003 and includes snack bars (rice, oat and soy crisps drizzled with chocolate), chocolate covered almonds and chocolate bars. Originally only available through online ordering directly from the manufacturer, the products were for a few years widely distributed throughout the United States in grocery and drug stores in addition to mass merchandisers. CocoaVia reportedly took ten years of research and development in addition to fifteen years research on flavanols and the development of the patented and proprietary process called Cocoapro that ensures flavanols remain active and are not destroyed. This process guarantees that CocoaVia contains a consistent level of cocoa flavanols (at least 100 mg per serving) with a recommended consumption of two servings each day. The assumption that all the health benefits are contained in the flavanols and that a healthy chocolate or confection line can be produced successfully. Each chocolate bar is one serving containing 100 kilocalories (420 kJ); six grams of fat; one gram of protein, twelve grams of carbohydrates and nine grams of sugar. Two daily servings of CocoaVia products taken daily is 200 kilocalories extra each day and 35% of a typical adult's daily value of saturated fat.
