Clarence Sumner Janifer was the first African American member of the Medical Society of New Jersey. He lived in Newark, New Jersey and graduated from the New York Homeopathic Medical College in 1915. He practiced in Newark as a pediatrician. He was the first African American member of the Medical Society of New Jersey when he joined in 1916. During World War I he was a medical officer in the infantry, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
