  • The Claremont Showgrounds were built in 1905 in the Perth suburb of Claremont. The Showgrounds are home to the annual Perth Royal Show. From 1927 the Claremont Speedway was run around the edge of the main oval of the showground. The distinctive barriers and fences around the edge of the oval were improved over time to prevent out of control vehicles from entering the spectator areas. In 1929 for the state of Western Australia Centenary - a pavilion was built, as well as a number of other features in the grounds. In 1999 the closure of the Speedway and relocation to the new Motorplex near Kwinana allowed the main showground arena to be redeveloped into a more open area, suitable for large music events such as the Big Day Out and other festivals. Claremont Showgrounds is also serviced by a special events train station on the Fremantle line. It has direct connection with the showgrounds. The old station was located further east with platforms on either side of the line, and required negotiating road crossings.
