Aenaes Mackay was een zoon van de Schote edelman John Mackay, tweede Lord Reay of Reay. Zijn zoon Daniël werd evenals zijn vader commandant van de Schotse Brigade in de Nederlanden. Hij sneuvelde in 1745 tijdens de Oostenrijkse Successieoorlog. Zijn nazaten bleven gedeeltelijk in Nederland wonen. Ook diverse nakomelingen kozen voor een militaire loopbaan.
