  • City Hospital (formerly Dudley Road Hospital, and still commonly referred to as such) is a major hospital in the city of Birmingham, England. It is located in the Winson Green area of the west of the city. It was first built in 1889. At this time there was a workhouse (still extant) on Western Road, Birmingham and the hospital was built as an extension to this. It originally comprised a single corridor stretching for a quarter of a mile with nine Nightingale Ward blocks radiating from it along its length. The original design was by an architect called W.H. Ward and was designed around a configuration recommended by Florence Nightingale. It was originally known as the Birmingham Union Infirmary which later changed to the Dudley Road Infirmary before becoming Dudley Road Hospital. The Birmingham Treatment Centre opened on the City Hospital site in November 2005. This £35m development provides state of the art facilities for one-stop diagnosis and treatment and completely replaces the existing Outpatient Department. It includes an Ambulatory Surgical Unit with six theatres, extensive imaging facilities, an integrated breast care centre and teaching accommodation. The site also includes the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital, the West Midlands Poisons Unit and is a major centre for sickle cell treatment in the region. Today City Hospital is part of Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, which was formed following the merger of City Hospital NHS Trust and the adjacent Sandwell Healthcare NHS Trust Sandwell General Hospital and Rowley Regis Hospitals being its main sites.
