На чимпое исполняют мелодии, украшенные мелизмами, трелями, форшлагами. Инструмент издаёт сильные, резкие и однообразные по тембру звуки. Звукоряд диатонический. Чимпой применяется как сольный и ансамблевый инструмент. Чимпой распространён в Молдавии и во всех областях Румынии, кроме Трансильвании.
