- Church visible is a term of Christian theology and ecclesiology which denotes the Communion of saints on Earth, as opposed to the Church invisible or Church triumphant, which includes the mystical and supernatural elements of the Church. In ecclesiology, the Church visible has many names, such as Kingdom of God, Disciples of Christ and People of God. St. Ignatius of Antioch was one of the first Christian authors to write about the subject, insisting that the Church visible was centered around the Bishop and the Eucharist or Last Supper. In early Christianity, anti-Gnostic and anti-Arian writers such as Irenaeus and Cyprian of Carthage would often focus on the visible Church in order to oppose various opinions deemed heretical. It was in this context that the expression Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus came about, which heavily insisted on the non-distinction between the visible and invisible Church. During the Reformation, Lutheran theologians strongly distinguished between visible and invisible Church in order to identify the Church of Rome as merely a visible Church, without any elements of the supernatural. In turn, Anabaptist critics of the Magisterial Reformation denounced Luther for having allegedly kept many of the old Visible and Magisterial elements of the Catholic Church. In the context of contemporary pluralism, there have been theological currents that downplay the role of liturgy and the public role of Christianity in order to remove it to the private sphere. Church leaders have responded by re-asserting the public, social and political character of the Church.
