After Sir Hugh Foot was transferred to Cyprus, he left Kings House and pursued a career in real estate and other businesses which brought him into contact with the Jamaican music community. He formed Island Records in 1959 and was one of the first to record the Jamaican popular music that eventually became known as ska music. In 1962, he returned to England and sold records from the back of his car to the Jamaican community. His business grew substantially, culminating in recognition as one of the most influential persons in the British music industry.

Nachdem dann 1967 Traffic bei Island unterschrieben, begann sich das Label mehr und mehr in Richtung Rock zu bewegen. Bis zum Beginn der 1970er Jahre produzierte Blackwell unter anderem Alben von Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Blind Faith, Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Free, Cat Stevens und Roxy Music. 1973 war Blackwell dann Produzent von Bob Marleys Catch a Fire, womit Island dann auch wieder Reggae-Aufnahmen zu veröffentlichen begann, darunter welche von Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Sly & Robbie und Third World. Marley sollte bis zu seinem Tod 1981 einer der wichtigsten Sänger des Labels bleiben. Ende der 1970er Jahre bereiste Blackwell dann die USA, um auch dort Interpreten für sein Label zu gewinnen. Zu den Bands und Musikern, die Island in den 1980ern unter Vertrag hatte, gehören unter anderem U2, The Pogues, Robert Palmer, Melissa Etheridge, Tom Waits, Anthrax, The Cranberries und Julian Cope. Mit dem Sublabel Mango und King Sunny Ade brachte Blackwell auch Weltmusik zu Island Records. 1982 produzierte er auf Jamaika den Musikfilm Countryman. 1989 verkaufte Blackwell das Label dann an A&M Records und trennte sich 1997 vollständig von ihm. 2001 wurde Blackwell in der Kategorie „Non-Performers“ in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen. Gemeinsam mit dem Trip Hop-Musiker Tricky gründete Chris Blackwell 2007 eine neue Plattenfirma namens "Brown Punk Records".
