Nepravé kartogramy (též nazývané pseudokartogramy) tedy nejsou vztaženy k ploše území, nemají prostorový základ. Tato metoda používaná při tvorbě tematických map se v anglické literatuře označuje jako choropleth mapping. Označení cartogram odpovídá tomu, co je v ČR známo jako metoda anamorfózy.
