Chiyonofuji Mitsugu, born June 1, 1955, as Mitsugu Akimoto in Hokkaidō, Japan, is a former champion sumo wrestler and the 58th yokozuna of the sport. He is now the head coach of Kokonoe stable. Chiyonofuji was one of the greatest yokozuna of recent times, winning 31 tournament championships, second only to Taihō. He was particularly remarkable for his longevity in sumo's top rank, which he held for a period of ten years from 1981 to 1991.

In a sport where weight is often regarded as vital, Chiyonofuji was quite light at around 120 kg. He relied on a superior technique and muscle to defeat opponents. Der Sohn eines Fischers begann seine Karriere im Jahr 1970 und stieg rasch auf, obwohl er sich bereits zu Anfang eine langwierige Schulterverletzung zugezogen hatte, die ihm noch über Jahre zu schaffen machte, ihn aber nicht daran hinderte, seine Kämpfe oft durch Wurftechniken zu entscheiden. 1981 zahlte sich seine Hartnäckigkeit jedoch aus, als er innerhalb weniger Monate zuerst zum Ōzeki und dann endlich zum Yokozuna befördert wurde. Danach blieb er bis zu seinem Rücktritt, den er erst 1991 in einem für aktive Sumōtori biblischen Alter von 36 bekannt gab, einer der bestimmenden Athleten des Sumō. 1988 blieb er gar 53 Kämpfe in Folge ungeschlagen und stellte damit die nach Futabayama mit 69 Siegen bis heute zweitlängste Serie auf. Wegen seiner zur Schau getragenen Emotionslosigkeit und seines stechenden Blicks, mit dem er seine Gegner bedachte, nannte man Chiyonofuji den "Wolf" - ein Name, mit dem in jüngerer Zeit auch der Yokozuna Asashōryū bedacht wird. Wie dieser war auch Chiyonofuji ein herausragender Techniker, wobei er mit 127 kg Kampfgewicht bei fast gleicher Körperlänge noch sehr viel leichter war. Dennoch gewann er insgesamt als einziger Rikishi über 1.000 Kämpfe - es waren genau 1.045, davon 807 in der Makuuchi-Division. Bereits als er 1989 986 Siege verbuchte, wurde er mit der nationalen Ehrenmedaille Japans ausgezeichnet. Mit 31 Turniersiegen steht er hinter Taiho auf dem zweiten Platz der als Turniersieger erfolgreichsten Ringer. Chiyonofuji schlug nach dem Ende seiner aktiven Laufbahn das Angebot des Sumōverbands aus, eine anteilsunabhängige Mitgliedschaft zu übernehmen, und zog es vor, einen regulären Anteil zu erwerben. Danach war er als Trainer erfolgreich: Als Kokonoe Mitsugu, wie er seit 1992 als Oyakata des Stalls Kokonoe-beya heißt, bildete er erfolgreiche Schüler wie Chiyotaikai und Chiyotenzan heran.
