Mitte der Siebziger gab Taylor das Musikgeschäft auf und wurde professioneller Spieler. Erst 1993 fing er wieder an neue Stücke zu schreiben (u.a. "Son of a Rotten Gambler" - geschrieben für seinen Sohn Kristian) und aufzunehmen. Zur Zeit arbeitet er mit der Violonistin Carrie Rodriguez zusammen, mit der er zuletzt im Herbst 2005 auf Einladung von Bill Frisell bei der RuhrTriennale in der Reihe Century of Song auftrat.
