Chinese martial arts, sometimes referred to by the Mandarin Chinese term wushu and popularly as kungfu, consist of a number of fighting styles that were developed over the centuries. Those fighting styles can be classified according to common themes that are identified as "families" (家, jiā), "sects" (派, pai) or "schools" (門, men) of martial arts.

Some styles focus on the the harnessing of qi and are labeled internal (内家拳), while others concentrate on improving muscle and cardiovascular fitness and are labeled external (外家拳). Geographical association, as in northern (北拳) and southern (南拳), is another popular method of categorization. Each fighting style offers a different approach to the common problems of self-defense, health, and self-cultivation from a Chinese perspective.

- Wushu (武術) is Chinees voor krijgskunst. Het eerste karakter 武 (wǔ) staat voor 'martiaal'. Het tweede karakter 術 (shù) betekent 'kunst'. Letterlijk staat WuShu dus voor krijgskunst. Vaak wordt in de praktijk Kungfu (功夫) of Gong Fu als synoniem gezien voor wushu, maar dit betekent 'vaardigheid'. Er is nogal wat onduidelijkheid over de termen. Vandaag de dag wordt de term wushu gebruikt om het wedstrijdgerichte aan te duiden daar waar de term kung fu meestal wordt gebruikt als men het over de traditionele stijlen heeft. De eigenlijke betekenis van Chinese martial art is meer dan alleen zelfverdediging. In de traditionele training wordt de leerlingen respect voor hun leraar, voor zijn adviezen en voor andere martial art stijlen bijgebracht.

Гунфу та ушу — популярні терміни, які стали синонімами китайським бойовим мистецтвам. Однак, китайські терміни Гунфу та Ушу мають суттєво відмінні значення. Ушу може описувати велике розмаїття бойових мистецтв незалежно від їх походження. Гунфу ж може використовуватися у контексті, який взагалі не стосується бойових мистецтв. Термін гунфу може бути віднесений до будь-якого досягнення або майстерності, здобутим шляхом довгої та важкої праці. З іншого боку, термін ушу, який відноситься до бойових мистецтв у цілому, став також і назвою сучасного спортивного ушу. Спортивне ушу подібне до гімнастики та включає використання адаптованих форм китайських бойових мистецтв з використанням зброї та без неї та судиться надаванням очків за сучасними критеріями естетики.
