Die Stadt liegt mitten in der Wüste in einer Oasenkultur. Pancho Villa hatte hier seinen Wohnsitz – von hier aus setzte er in der Mexikanischen Revolution die División del Norte in Gang. In den 1930er Jahren wurde etwa 160 km südwestlich von Chihuahua der sogenannte Starchild-Schädel gefunden.
