  • A Chicano vendido is a pejorative term for an American of Mexican descent who assimilates into mainstream American culture. It is similar in nature to the pejorative terms Uncle Tom and race traitor. Chicanos were originally a mass label for all U.S. citizens of Mexican descent; vendido means sellout. The term was popularized in the 1967 theater play Los Vendidos, but even before the Chicano Movement of the 1960s, Mexican Americans who were able to "escape" from the barrio were targets of ridicule and parody and known as vendidos. In Chicano literature, Chicano vendido stereotypes are repentant and shameless betrayers of their own race.
