Una chicane o chicana es un dispositivo instalado en la vía pública para producir una serie de curvas artificiales. Son utilizadas en la ciudad o en sus alrededores asi que en los autódromos para los mismos fines que los resaltos: reducir la velocidad de circulación. En los circuito de carreras se compone de una serie de curvas apretadas y normalmente en forma de S, o bien dos curvas, una al principio y otra al final de una pequeña recta, con el propósito de frenar el tráfico. Normalmente estas curvas se colocan al final de las rectas principales, lo que hace que estos lugares sean importantes puntos de adelantamiento. Se ha criticado a la FIA por insertar chicanes en puntos críticos de ciertos circuitos, argumentando que se pierde la esencia de ciertos circuitos míticos como son Le Mans, Spa o Monza. Algunos circuitos presentan chicanes "opcionales". Mientras que en categorías superiores se usan, en categorías más lentas se puede evitar la chicana, debido a que los automóviles no son capaces de conseguir las elevadas velocidades que harían necesario su uso. En la Fórmula 1, el vehículo que se salte la chicane atravesándola por fuera del asfalto debe ceder su puesto en carrera en el caso de que hubiese otro automóvil a su nivel, con o sin posibilidad de adelantamiento. El término se usa también en otro tipo de carreras, como por ejemplo el bobsleigh, a la hora de indicar características similares en el trazado.

In alcuni casi, il taglio della chicane può comportare una sanzione sportiva, come è capitato ad esempio nel Gran Premio del Belgio 2008, in cui Lewis Hamilton, avendo sorpassato Kimi Räikkönen senza attraversare correttamente la chicane, ha scontato una penalità di 25 secondi, che lo ha declassato dal 1º al 3º posto nell'ordine d'arrivo. Il termine "chicane" viene usato anche in altri circuiti sportivi che presentano caratteristiche simili nel tracciato, come quelli per il bob, nonché riguardo a percorsi stradali resi tortuosi per rallentare la circolazione delle auto, nell'ambito della moderazione del traffico.

On modern racing circuits, chicanes are usually located after long straights, making them a prime location for overtaking. They can be placed tactically by circuit designers to prevent vehicles from reaching speeds deemed to be unsafe. A prime example of this is the Tamburello chicane at Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, which was placed after Ayrton Senna's death at the original corner. At Circuit de la Sarthe, chicanes were placed alongside the 6-km Mulsanne straight in order to slow down Le Mans Prototypes, which with Group C Prototypes went to speeds as high as 400 km/h. Turn 6 was deemed to be unsafe for motorcycles, as immediately following this is a slow right hairpin corner. This means riders may still have been leaning to the left when being expected to begin braking for Turn 7. "Mobile chicane" and "moving chicane" are terms often used to describe slower drivers and vehicles who hold other competitors up.
