He won the National Film Award for Best Actor and also the Karnataka Government's Best Actor Award for the movie Tabarana Kathe, directed by Girish Kasaravalli in 1987. Charuhasan is the father of the famous South Indian actress Suhasini Maniratnam and the brother of famous film star Kamal Haasan. He has also acted in several other Tamil and Kannada movies.
