The club was founded on 9 June 1905, when a number of youth clubs in the South-East London area, including East Street Mission and Blundell Mission, combined to form Charlton Athletic Football Club. The club is based at The Valley, where it has played since 1919, apart from one year in Catford, during 1923–24, and seven years at Crystal Palace and West Ham United between 1985 and 1992. Charlton turned professional in 1920 and first entered the Football League in 1921. Since then, they have had four separate periods in the top flight of English football: between 1936 and 1957; 1986 and 1990; 1998 and 1999, and 2000 to 2007. Historically, Charlton's most successful period was the 1930s, when the club's highest league finishes were recorded, and the 1940s, when the club reached the FA Cup final twice, winning in 1947. After being relegated from the Championship in 2008–09, they play in Football League One as of the 2009–10 season.

- Charlton Athletic FC is een Engelse voetbal-club, uitkomend in de Football League Championship en opgericht in juni 1905. Ze spelen in stadion The Valley in zuid-oost Londen. Rondom de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Charlton een van de betere teams in de hoogste divisie van het Engelse voetbal, met een grote aanhang. Vlak na de tweede wereld oorlog was The Valley dan ook het grootste voetbalstadion van Engeland. In 1957 werd Jimmy Seed, de trainer van Charlton sinds 1932, ontslagen. Vlak daarna degradeerde Charlton uit de hoogste divisie. In 1972 degradeerde de club zelfs nog verder. De jaren daarop speelde Charlton afwisselend in de toenmalige Second Division en Third Division. In deze tijd werd de club minder populair. In 1984 kwamen financiële problemen aan het licht en werd de club onder curatele gesteld. Rond deze tijd moest Charlton ook een aantal jaar in andere stadions spelen. Eerst op Selhurst Park, van Crystal Palace, daarna op Upton Park van West Ham United. Pas in 1992 speelde de club werd op een vernieuwde en verbeterde Valley en onder leiding van trainer Alan Curbishley promoveerde de club in 1998 weer naar de Premier League. Ze degradeerden meteen weer, maar kwamen in 2000 ook weer meteen terug en konden zich dan wel voor langere tijd vestigen. In het seizoen 2006-2007 ging het niet zo goed. Trainer Iain Dowie werd ontslagen en opgevolgd door Les Reed. Ook hij kreeg de motor niet op gang en werd na 41 dagen eveneens ontslagen. Reed werd opgevolgd door Alan Pardew, die een degradatie echter niet kon vermijden. Nauwelijks twee jaar later kreeg de club een nieuwe tegenslag te verwerken door afgetekend laatste te eindigen in de Championship.

Mudanças no controle e no gerenciamento do time levaram a problemas financeiros que exigiram intervenção em 1984. O clube se transformou em Charlton Athletic Ltd. A falta de dinheiro levou a equipe a atuar em Selhurst Park, estádio do Crystal Palace, na Década de 80. Mesmo a promoção à Primeira Divisão em 1986 não aliviou as finanças do clube. Em 1990 a equipe voltou à segunda divisão. No mesmo ano, os torcedores do clube fundaram seu próprio partido político em resposta à recusa do governo de Greenwich à proposta de reforma do estádio "The Valley". O "The Valley Party" (Partido The Valley) ganhou 15 mil votos e conseguiu forçar o conselho da região a aprovar a reforma do estádio. Em 1991, a equipe deixou o Selhurst Park e jogou a temporada em Upton Park, campo do West Ham United.
