In 1935, Taylor was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Eastbourne in East Sussex, in an unopposed by-election on 29th March following the death of Conservative MP John Slater. He held the seat until his retirement from the House of Commons at the February 1974 general election, when he was succeeded by Ian Gow.
