Russell was expelled from the Country Party in 1951 for advocating the appreciation of the pound, which was against party policy. He contested the seat in the 1951 election as an independent, polling 29.9% of the primary vote. His preferences went towards electing his successor as the Country Party candidate, Wilfred Brimblecombe. He became a grazier after leaving politics, and died in 1977.
