He received a J.D. from De Paul University College of Law in 1969. He was an Illinois Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967. He was in private practice in Chicago, Illinois from 1969 to 1971. He was a First assistant U.S. attorney of Northern District of Illinois from 1971 to 1977.
