Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun KT was a Scottish nobleman. He was the son of John Hope of Hopetoun, grandson of Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet of Craighall, Fife. John Hope purchased the barony of Niddry Castle from the Earl of Winton around 1680. He also bought the neighbouring barony of Abercorn, with the office of heritable sheriff of the County of Linlithgow, from Sir Walter Seton. In 1684, John Hope was shire commissioner for Linlithgow in the Parliament of Scotland.

He later served as a Scottish representative peer at Westminster, from 1722 until his death. Lord Hopetoun acted as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1723, and was Governor of the Bank of Scotland from 1740 until his death. He was created a Knight of the Thistle in 1738. In 1699, Charles Hope married Lady Henrietta Johnstone, daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale. Er unterstützte den Zusammenschluss mit England. Seit 1722 war er einer der schottischen Representative Peers im House of Lords, eine Stellung, die er bis zu seinem Tod innehatte. Außerdem war er seit 1715 Lord Lieutenant von Linlithgowshire. Er war aber auch 1723 Lord High Commissioner in der General Assembly der Church of Scotland. Von 1740 bis zu seinem Tode war er auch Präsident der Bank of Scotland. 1738 wurde er in den Distelorden aufgenommen. Als Hope 1742 verstarb, ging sein Titel auf seinen ältesten Sohn John über. Einer seiner Enkelsöhne war George Johnstone Hope, der am höchsten dekorierte Offizier, der in der Schlacht von Trafalgar kämpfte.
