- Charles (Charlie) Edward Greene is a former American athlete, winner of gold medal in 4x100 m relay at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Charles Greene was considered a sure bet to make the 1964 Olympic team, but he suffered a muscle pull that held him to a sixth place at the Olympic Trials. Greene won the AAU championships in 100 yd in 1966 and in 100 m in 1968. At the 1968 AAU Championships, Greene broke the 100 m world record twice. First in the heats he equalled the world record of 10.0, then in the second semifinal he ran 9.9, the same time which had been run by Jim Hines and Ronnie Ray Smith in the previous race. As a University of Nebraska student, Greene won the NCAA championships in 100 yd from 1965 to 1967 and tied the world record at 9.1. At the Mexico Olympics, Greene felt pain in his hamstring late in the race and was third in the 100 m. Despite the injury, he led off the American 4x100 m relay team that won the gold medal and set a new world record of 38.19. Following his athletic career, Greene became an Army officer, serving as sprint coach at West Point and head coach of the All-Army team. After retiring from the Army, he became a director for Special Olympics International. In 2007, Charles Greene became the sprints coach at Lincoln Northeast High School in Lincoln, Nebraska. He coached multiple state qualifiers in his first year along with the states 3rd place 4x400 relay team of Logan Reising, Brian May, Tory Berks, and AJ Robinson. His son Andy Greene is a writer for Rolling Stone magazine.

Olympischen Sommerspielen 1968 in Mexiko gewann er die Bronzemedaille im 100-Meter-Lauf hinter dem US-Amerikaner Jin Hines (Gold) und dem Jamaikaer Lennox Miller (Silber) und die Mannschafts-Goldmedaille im 4 x 100-Meter-Staffellauf zusammen mit seinen Teamkollegen Melvin Pender, Ronnie Ray Smith und Jim Hines, vor dem Teams aus Kuba (Silber) und Frankreich (Bronze).

Był niemal pewnym kandydatem do występu na igrzyskach olimpijskich w 1964 w Tokio, ale podczas amerykańskich kwalifikacji przedolimpijskich naciągnął mięsień i ukończył bieg na 100 m dopiero na 6. pozycji. W 1966 zdobył mistrzostwo Stanów Zjednoczonych (AAU) w biegu na 100 jardów, a w 1968 na 100 metrów. Jako student University of Nebraska był również akademickim mistrzem USA na 100 jardów od 1965 do 1967 (w tym ostatnim roku wyrównał rekord świata na tym dystansie wynikiem 9,1 s). Podczas zwycięskich mistrzostw USA w 1968 w Sacramento Greene dwukrotnie wyrównał rekord świata na 100 m. Najpierw w eliminacjach uzyskał czas 10,0 s, a potem wygrał drugi półfinał czasem z 9,9 s (taki sam czas w pierwszym półfinale osiągnęli Jim Hines i Ronnie Ray Smith). Według pomiaru elektronicznego Greene przebiegł 100 m w 10,09 s (wobec 10,03 Hinesa i 10,13 Smitha). Na igrzyskach olimpijskich w 1968 w Meksyku Greene zdobył brązowy medal w biegu na 100 m. W czasie biegu finałowego naciągnął sobie ścięgno. Nie przeszkodziło mu to jednak wystąpić na 1. zmianie sztafety 4 x 100 m, która zdobyła złoty medal poprawiając rekord świata na 38,24 s . Po zakończeniu kariery sportowej Greene został oficerem Armii USA i służył jako trener lekkoatletyczny w West Point. Po zakończeniu służby w armii pracował nadal jako trener, a także był dyrektorem Olimpiady Specjalnej.
