He was born in Inverary, Argyllshire, Scotland of Irish parents who moved to Glasgow. He died in Sydney, Australia. He emigrated to New Zealand where he was the Member of Parliament for the Goldfields, Otago electorate 1866-1870, and then for Thames 1871-1875, when he was defeated. He moved to Australia.
