After the death of his father in 1711, he succeeded him as Member of Parliament for Stamford, a seat which he held until he was defeated in 1727. He followed Montagu Venables-Bertie, 2nd Earl of Abingdon, his kinsman, in opposition to the French commerce bill but was otherwise a reliable Tory.
