A broader interpretation of the Central Plain's extent would add the Guanzhong plain of Shaanxi, the northwestern part of Jiangsu, and parts of Anhui and northern Hebei. Since the beginning of recorded history, the Central Plain has been an important site for Chinese civilization. In the pre-Qin era, present-day Luoyang and its nearby areas were considered the “Center of the World”, as the political seat of the Xia Dynasty was located around Songshan and the Yi-Luo river basin. Inscriptions on some bronze objects from this era contain references to the 'Central States', 'Eastern States', or 'Southern States'. This indicates that the Central Plain, which was referred as the 'Central States' in these inscriptions, was considered to occupy the center of the world. The Songshu, official history of Song Dynasty states: “Ancient emperors of ability arose in the northwest, that were able to conquer the Central Plain and further occupy the southeast. " Zhuge Liang, a famous military strategist also stated that "he would lead an army to conquer the Central Plain. " All these point to the fact that the Central Plain was of both political and strategic importance. This may be the reason that many later dynasties selected Luoyang and Kaifeng in the Central Plain as their capitals.

(中國 / 中国, Zhōnggúo) Das Buch von Song, eine offizielle historische Quelle aus der Song-Dynastie besagt: „Fähige Kaiser des Altertums entstammen dem Nordwesten [Chinas] und konnten die Zentrale Ebene und später den Südosten [Chinas] erobern. “ Zhuge Liang, ein Militärstratege, behauptete, er würde eine Armee zur Eroberung der Zentralchinesischen Ebene führen. Dies könnte eine Erklärung für die Lage von Hauptstädten späterer Dynastien in Luoyang oder Kaifeng sein.

Volgens historische bronnen is dat het gebied waar de eerste Han-Chinezen woonden en wordt het gezien als de wieg van de Chinese beschaving. De Han-Chinezen in oude China noemden hun land Zhongguo of Zhongzhou in plaats van Zhongyuan. China bestond toen grotendeels uit delen van de provincies Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei en Shandong en uit kleinere delen van Henan. Na de val van de Song-dynastie trokken miljoenen Han-Chinezen uit dit gebied om voor de Mongolen te vluchten. Ze werden Hakkanezen genoemd en vluchtten naar het zuiden van China. De Hakkanezen gingen steeds verder in zuidelijke richting en nu wonen de meeste van hen in Zuid-Fujian, Zuid-Henan, Zuid-Jiangxi, Guangdong. Ook zijn er velen later geïmmigreerd naar het buitenland zoals Nederland en Groot-Brittannië. Het Mandarijns dat men in de meeste delen van Zhongyuan spreekt wordt Zhongyuan-Mandarijn genoemd.
