- CentOS is a community-supported, free and open source operating system based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It exists to provide a free enterprise class computing platform and strives to maintain 100% binary compatibility with its upstream distribution. CentOS stands for Community ENTerprise Operating System.

Sostanzialmente la differenza tra Red Hat e CentOS risiede principalmente nell'assenza di assistenza (il vero/principale motivo per cui si paga), e il cambio del logo, dato che Red Hat è un trade mark. Altre differenze minime risiedono nella garanzia, dato che i binari vengono testati, e compilati in un certo modo (ognuno dà al compilatore le opzioni che preferisce). Esistono anche altre distribuzioni derivate dal codice sorgente di Red Hat. Per scaricare e installare gli aggiornamenti, CentOS usa YUM, mentre Red Hat usa up2date. La nuova versione però di Red Hat 5 è passata a YUM.
