Tutto ciò fino al 1998, in cui, stanchi di cercare nuovi cantanti, e contenti del recente acquisto al basso (Caleb Scofield, del quale dicono di averci diviso il furgone con la sua vecchia band ai tempi del primo tour, ignorando totalmente che sapesse suonare il basso, "e anche piuttosto bene"), registrano Until Your Heart Stops, entrati nelle grazie di Aaron Turner (proprietario della Hydrahead e chitarra/voce negli Isis). Il suono tipico post un po' rock 'n' roll e a tratti molto melodico li caratterizza fino in fondo tanto che nel 2003 arriva Antenna, accompagnato da un contratto su una major come RCA. Il sound dell'album è sensibilmente diverso, molto più "easy listening" degli altri. Nonostante avessero più volte pensato di abbandonare la linea caotica e le voci in screaming (soprattutto in seguito ai problemi alla gola di Stephen), dopo un tour post-Antenna arriva nel 2005 Perfect Pitch Black, che segna il ritorno del quartetto verso Hydrahead, e verso sonorità più aggressive e complesse. Nello stesso periodo lascia la band il batterista John Connors, e al suo posto subentra Ben Koller, attuale batterista dei Converge.

After several members changes in the late 90's, their lineup solidified with the 1998 release of Until Your Heart Stops through Hydra Head Records. Their early albums were prominent releases in the independent metalcore scene. After this release, the band started experimenting with other genres. Cave In later received mainstream recognition for their 2003 RCA Records album Antenna and its lead single "Anchor," which had an overall alternative rock style. The group went on hiatus in 2006 and later reformed in 2009 with the release of a new EP, Planets of Old—a release that saw a return to Cave In's earlier and heavier sound.
