I giocatori dovranno ora imparare ad addestrare cavalieri per ostacolare gli avversari, difendere l'isola di Catan dai barbari, sviluppare le proprie città per ottenere maggiori vantaggi dalle nuove carte sviluppo. Tutto questo nel tentativo di guadagnare 13 punti vittoria e vincere la partita. Quest'espansione richiede il gioco originale I Coloni di Catan per essere giocata. È compatibile con l'espansione Marinai. È possibile giocare in 5-6 giocatori, ma è necessaria sia l'espansione per 5-6 giocatori de I Coloni di Catan sia quella specifica per Città & Cavalieri, entrambe vendute separatamente.
