Обучающиеся должны проанализировать ситуацию, разобраться в сути проблем, предложить возможные решения и выбрать лучшее из них. Различают полевые ситуации, основанные на реальном фактическом материале, и кресельные (вымышленные) кейсы. Впервые был применён в Гарвардской бизнес-школе (англ.
