- The Carthage Film Festival is a biannual October film festival hosted by the government of Tunisia. It alternates with the Damascus International Film Festival. On a conception of the filmmaker Tahar Cheriaa, the festival was created in 1966 by the Tunisian Minister of Culture to showcase films from the Maghreb, Africa, and the Middle East. In order to be eligible for competition, a film must have a director of African or Middle Eastern nationality, and have been produced at least two years before entry. Its grand prize is the Tanit d'or, or "Golden Tanit," named for the lunar goddess of ancient Carthage; the award is in the shape of her symbol, a trapezium sumrounted by a horizontal line and a circle. - Le Giornate cinematografiche di Cartagine (in francese Journées cinématographiques de Carthage, in arabo أيام قرطاج السينمائية ayyām Qarṭāj al-sīnimāiyya) sono un Festival cinematografico che si tiene ogni due anni (alternando con le Giornate teatrali di Cartagine) a Tunisi. Lanciata nel 1966 dal ministro della cultura tunisino, Chedli Klibi, questa manifestazione, la prima del genere nel mondo arabo, ha l'obiettivo di mettere in evidenza il cinema africano e del mondo arabo, creare ponti di dialogo tra il Nord e il Sud e proporre un incontro tra cineasti e appassionati del cinema di ogni genere. Così si espresse allora Klibi: « Nous espérons d'abord un dialogue. Un dialogue, franc, lucide, sans arrière-pensées. Mais nous sommes sûrs qu'un tel dialogue ne peut conduire qu'à une meilleure connaissance réciproque entre Africains et Européens, entre Méditerranée du Sud et Méditerranée du Nord. » « Auspichiamo innanzitutto un dialogo. Un dialogo, franco, lucido, senza riserve mentali. Ma siamo sicuri che un tale dialogo non può che condurre ad una migliore conoscenza reciproca tra Africani ed Europei, tra Mediterraneo del Sud e Mediterraneo del Nord. » (Chedli Klibi) Il programma ufficiale comprende diverse sezioni: la competizione ufficiale e la sezione panoramica che sono aperte ai film arabi e africani, la sezione internazionale aperta ai film recenti e di grande qualità artistica, una sezione omaggio destinata al cinema nazionale o ad un cineasta di fama, oltre ad un atelier dei progetti destinato a favorire lo sviluppo dei progetti di film africani e arabi mediante la concessione di borse alle sceneggiature e una sezione video competitiva. I premi vengono denominati Tanit (d'oro, di argento e di bronzo) in ricordo della antica divinità femminile cartaginese.
