Nach diesem Erfolg komponierte er auch für die Filme seines Sohnes die Musik zu Apocalypse Now, Die Outsider und Der steinerne Garten. Für Apocalypse Now erhielt er 1980 einen Golden Globe Award. 1981 schuf er für die rekonstruierte Fassung von Abel Gances Meisterwerk Napoléon (1927) eine neue Filmmusik, die Anfang der 1980er Jahre spektakulär in Begleitung von Symphonieorchestern aufgeführt wurde. Carmine Coppola war verheiratet mit Italia Coppola und gemeinsam hatten sie drei Kinder: Francis Ford Coppola, August Coppola (ein Literaturprofessor an der Columbia-Universität in New York und Vater von Nicolas Cage) und Talia Shire.
