- Carlos de Gurrea Aragón y Borja (1634 — 1692), 9th Duque de Villahermosa was a Spanish nobleman, viceroy and governor. He was Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands between 1675 and 1677. During his reign Spanish authority over the Southern Netherlands was nominal. France and the Dutch Republic could fight the Battle of Cassel (1677) and the Battle of Saint-Denis (1678) on its territory without any significant Spanish contribution. It was at that time, around 1677, he got reinforcements from the Spanish Governor of the Duchy of Milan, Italy, between 1670 and 1674, Gaspar Tellez-Giron y Sandoval, Duke of Osuna, receiving thus the military Tercio of Valladares commanded by Field Marshal Isidro de la Cueva - Benavides, V Marquis of Bedmar, (1652 - 1723), defender of Dinant, Huy, Limbourg and Bauchin and defeated at Valenciennes, Cambray, Saint Omer and other locations. He was thus replaced by Alessandro Farnese, Prince of Parma (1635 — 1689) who was Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1678 until 1682, while Isidro de la Cueva-Benavides, Sergeant General of Battle, became the Governor of Brussels, being promoted in 1682 to the position of Captain General of the Spanish Artillery in the Low Countries by King Charles II of Spain, a position he held till 1685 . Further, the Spanish Military Engineering Academy of Brussels, (created 1675 - disappeared 1706), was reinforced by the Sergeant General of Battle, one degree above the Field Marshal category, Sebastian Fernandez de Medrano, (1646 - 1705), who got between his students Flemish Engineers as efficient as Prospero Jorge de Verboom,, the son of famous Flemish military engineer Cornelius van Verboom, (???? - circa 1693), a colleague while in France of famous Vauban, (1633 - 1707), and a friend and colleague of famous military Swede-Dutch Enginneer Menno van Coehoorn, (Leeuwarden, 1641 - 1704), both heavily involved in the fortifications of and around Namur. In 1678, Carlos de Gurrea Aragon y Borja became a knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece. He was Viceroy of Catalonia between 1688 and 1690 dying two years later. He had married in 1656 with Maria Enriquez de Guzman y Cordova (died 1695). They had no children.
