It is located in the Mainz "Neustadt", the former "Gartenfeld" which was subject to the Mainz city expansion.

März 1877 zum Oberbürgermeister der Stadt ernannt; dieses Amt hatte er bis zu seinem Ableben 1877 inne. Carl Wallau war aktiv in einer Reihe von Vereinen, u.a. im Mainzer Arbeiterbildungsverein, den er 1848 mitbegründete und aus dessen Nachfolgeorganisationen später die Volkshochschule hervorgehen sollte. Er war auch aktiver Fassenachter und stand 1872 dem Mainzer Carneval-Verein als Präsident vor. Eine Straße in Mainz wurde im Jahr 1895 nach Carl Wallau benannt, die Wallaustraße (ehem. „Zwetschenallee“). Diese befindet sich in der Neustadt von Mainz, dem ehemaligen Gartenfeld, das Gegenstand der Mainzer Stadterweiterung war.
