Premiere hatte er am 14. Dezember 1990 im Vereinigten Königreich. In Deutschland erschien er am 27. Februar 1991. Protagonist des Films ist der gleichnamige Superheld des Verlagshauses Timley Comics, dem späteren Comicverlag Marvel. Der Superheld trägt einen Superhelden-Anzug in den Farben der Flagge der USA. Erfunden haben ihn Jack Kirby und Joe Simon. 1941 wurde das erste Comicheft mit den Heldentaten von Captain America herausgegeben.
