  • File:Capital Tower, Jan 06. JPG Capital Tower, the fourth tallest skyscraper in Singapore, is the corporate headquarters of CapitaLand. CapitaLand Limited SGX: C31 is one of Asia's largest real estate companies. Headquartered and listed in Singapore, the multi-local company's core businesses in real estate, hospitality and real estate financial services are focused in growth cities in Asia Pacific, Europe and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. It is the parent company of The Ascott Group Limited, and it is the merged company of the then DBS Land and Pidemco Land. Its listed subsidiaries and associates include four real estate investment trusts (REITs), CapitaMall Trust, CapitaCommercial Trust, Ascott Residence Trust and CapitaRetail China Trust, as well as Australian property group Australand. The President and CEO of CapitaLand is Liew Mun Leong. Concurrently, he is Deputy Chairman of The Ascott Group Limited, CapitaLand's serviced residence arm, which is the world's largest international serviced residence owner-operator. He is also Deputy Chairman of CapitaMall Trust Management Limited, the manager of CapitaMall Trust, the first listed real estate investment trust in Singapore, CapitaCommercial Trust Management Limited, Ascott Residence Trust Management Limited and CapitaRetail China Trust Management Limited. He is also a Director of CapitaLand Hope Foundation, which is CapitaLand's philanthropic arm. In addition, Mr Liew chairs the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. Mr Liew graduated from the University of Singapore with a Civil Engineering degree in 1970 and is a registered professional civil engineer. In 2006, he was awarded Outstanding CEO of the Year in the Singapore Business Awards. In 2007, he was conferred the CEO of the Year award (for firms with market value of S$500 million or more) in The Business Times’ Singapore Corporate Awards. In 2008, Mr Liew was named Asia’s Best Executive of 2008 (Singapore) by Asiamoney and Best CEO in Asia (Property) by Institutional Investor. CapitaLand Hope Foundation(嘉德希望基金), the philanthropic arm of CapitaLand was established in November 2005 to further CapitaLand’s corporate social responsibility commitment to building a better future for underprivileged children. Every year, CapitaLand allocates up to 0.5% of the Group’s net profit to CHF. Its focus is to support programmes for the education, healthcare and shelter needs of underprivileged children. To date, CHF has supported over 40 charities and programmes in Singapore, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. Some of the initiatives geared to help underprivileged children include CapitaLand Hope Schools, as well as the CapitaLand Kids Programme. In China, CHF has collaborated with local charities and authorities to build nine CapitaLand Hope Schools. These include an environmentally sustainable Green Hope School in Sichuan due to be ready in October 2009. CHF also supports the building and/or refurbishment of dormitories, classrooms, libraries, and school facilities in countries like Vietnam and Thailand. The CapitaLand Kids Programme aims to provide direct financial support for needy children. To date, the programme has provided more than S$500,000 to fund the living, educational and medical expenses of children in Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Another signature project is the ‘Green for Hope’ project reaching out to primary schools in Singapore. This project helps to create greater awareness of the importance of recycling amongst young children and to inspire them to care for their less fortunate schoolmates. CHF will donate S$2 for every kilogramme of recyclable waste collected – up to S$1.75 million to the welfare funds of participating schools. Part of CapitaLand’s corporate philanthropy focus is staff volunteerism, which aims to engage CapitaLand staff with the community. All staff are given 3 days of paid Volunteer Service Leave a year to undertake charitable activities related to the needy and underprivileged as well as the environment. There are also various regular volunteering activities organized for staff. One such example is CapitaLand PEEK (Providing Educational Exposure for Kids) where staff volunteers conduct an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of CapitaLand properties to children of staff and underprivileged children supported by CHF. Due to its success, PEEK is now open to primary schools in Singapore. Staff are also encouraged to organise their own volunteering initiatives. INSIDE Different Geographies (an e-publication by CapitaLand, www. capitaland. com/inside) INSIDE Different Geographies is an information resource that offers insights to architectural landmarks, real estate market movements and styles, gourmet and entertainment that can be found within the properties. This e-publication also features interviews with architects and management in the industry.
