Cambrai is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department. Cambrai is the seat of an archdiocese whose jurisdiction was immense during the Middle Ages. The territory of the Bishopric of Cambrai, roughly coinciding with the shire of Brabant, included the central part of the Low Countries. The bishopric had some limited secular power. Cambrai was the Duke of Wellington's headquarters, for the British Army of Occupation, from 1815 to 1818.

Occupée par l'armée allemande pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, Cambrai voit se dérouler à ses portes en 1917 la bataille qui porte son nom, où les tanks sont pour la première fois utilisés massivement. Le développement économique et démographique qui suit la Seconde Guerre mondiale est brutalement inversé par le premier choc pétrolier de 1973. Cambrai est aujourd'hui une ville moyenne aux fonctions locales, qui a su garder un cadre de vie agréable et cherche un nouveau souffle économique grâce à sa position sur les grands axes autoroutiers et fluviaux.
