Die Bezeichnungen leiten sich von den klassischen Coupé-de-Ville- und Sedanca-de-Ville-Karosserieversionen der zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre ab, bei denen der Fahrer im Freien saß und sich nur über die Passagiere ein Dach spannte; die Bezeichnung des Lincoln Town Car geht auf dieselbe Bedeutung zurück. In der jahrzehntelang bis Ende der siebziger Jahre üblichen Cadillac-Modellhierarchie rangierte der DeVille zumeist als mittleres Modell über der Series 62 (später Calais) und unter den exklusiven Fleetwood-Modellen. Nach Einführung der ersten, im Gefolge der Ölkrise von 1973, in den Abmessungen reduzierten Modellgeneration 1976, erfolgte im Frühjahr 1984 der Wechsel zum Frontantrieb in einer nochmals kleineren Karosserie.
