The station was licensed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on May 30, 2008. On February 2, 2009, CHHR applied to the CRTC to swap frequencies with KAFE 104.3 in Bellingham, Washington. KAFE has already applied to the FCC to move to 104.1 and been granted a construction permit. The move is required to reduce interference between KAFE and KMCQ 104.5 Covington, Washington near Seattle. The frequency swap was granted on March 31, 2009. The station started testing on 104.1 on June 1, 2009. The station officially went on the air on July 1, 2009. CHHR will swap frequencies with KAFE as soon as KAFE has approval from the FCC to switch to 104.1.
