- CDS/ISIS is a software package for generalised Information Storage and Retrieval systems developed, maintained and disseminated by UNESCO. It was first released in 1985 and since then over 20,000 licences have been issued by UNESCO and a worldwide network of distributors. It is particularly suited to bibliographical applications and is used for the catalogues of many small and medium-sized libraries. Versions have been produced in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish amongst other languages. UNESCO makes the software available free for non-commercial purposes, though distributors are allowed to charge for their expenses. CDS/ISIS is an acronmym which stands for Computerised Documentation Service / Integrated Set of Information Systems. In 2003 it was stated that "This package is accepted by libraries in the developing countries as a standard software for information system development". The original CDS/ISIS ran on an IBM mainframe and was designed in the mid 1970s under Mr Giampaolo Del Bigio for UNESCO's Computerized Documentation System (CDS). It was based on the internal ISIS (Integrated Set of Information Systems) at the International Labour Organization in Geneva. In 1985 a version was produced for mini- and microcomputers programmed in Pascal. It ran on an IBM PC under MS-DOS . Winisis, the Windows version, first demonstrated in 1995, may run on a single computer or in a local area network. The JavaISIS client/server components allow remote database management over the Internet and are available for Windows, Linux and Macintosh. Furthermore, GenISIS allows the user to produce HTML Web forms for CDS/ISIS database searching. The ISIS_DLL provides an API for developing CDS/ISIS based applications. OpenIsis library provides another API for developing CDS/ISIS based applications with some improvements.
- Bei CDS/ISIS (Computerized Documentation System/Integrated Set of Information Systems, englisch in etwa „computergestütztes Dokumentationssystem/Integrierte Sammlung von Informationssystemen“) handelt es sich um ein Datenbankverwaltungssystem zur generellen Informationsspeicherung und einer Schnittstelle zur Abfrage, das von der UNESCO entwickelt, gepflegt und seit 1985 verbreitet wird. Die Windows Version der Software, die unter dem Namen Winisis bekannt ist, kann ebenso auf einen einzelnen Computer oder in LAN laufen. Die Javaversion JavaISIS ist eine Client-Server-Version erlaubt eine externe Abfrage über das Internet und ist für die Betriebssysteme Windows, Linux und Macintosh vorhanden. GenISIS erlaubt dem Benutzer, HTML Webformulare für die CDS/ISIS Datenbankabfrage zu produzieren. Dieses Datenbanksystem wird in erster Linie für bibliografische Datenbanken benutzt. Die frei definierbare Datenbankstruktur lässt das System aber auch für viele andere Zwecke einsetzen, in denen alphanumerische Daten strukturiert gesammelt und verfügbar gemacht werden sollen. Wegen seiner multilingualen Systemarchitektur ist CDS/ISIS und Winisis in viele Sprachen übersetzt weltweit verbreitet. In vielen Ländern gibt es von der UNESCO registrierte Multiplikatoren und Distributoren für CDS/ISIS und Winisis. Daneben haben sich auch eine Reihe von Nutzerorganisationen gegründet, die sich gegenseitig in der Weiterentwicklung und der Anwendung der Software unterstützen. CDS/ISIS und Winisis sind vor allem in Lateinamerika und Osteuropa sehr verbreitet. Aber auch in Asien und Afrika wird das System eingesetzt. In Westeuropa ist es weniger populär. Während es in Portugal und Italien selbst in öffentlichen Bibliotheken eingesetzt wird, findet es in Deutschland vor allem in Hochschulinstituten und anderen Bildungseinrichtungen, Museen und kleineren Vereinen Anwendung. Eine deutschsprachige Version stellt der CDS/ISIS Netzwerk e.V. als Organisation deutschsprachiger Anwender zur Verfügung. Auf der Webseite dieses gemeinnützigen Vereins kann Winisis mit einer Beispieldatenbank und deutschsprachiger Dokumentation kostenfrei heruntergeladen werden.

Rilasciato per la prima volta nel 1985 e da allora sono state autorizzate oltre 20,000 licenze dall'UNESCO e dalla rete mondiale di distributori. È particolarmente adatta per applicazioni bibliografiche e per l'uso nelle librerie e cataloghi, sia piccole che medio/grandi. Versioni sono state prodotte in arabo, cinese, inglese, francese, tedesco, italiano, portoghese, russo, spagnolo e molti altri linguaggi. UNESCO lavora per mantenere il software libero per scopi non commerciali, benché ai distributori sia concesso di farsi rimborsare le spese. CDS/ISIS è un acronimo che sta per Computerised Documentation Service / Integrated Set of Information Systems. "Il pacchetto software è concesso alle librerie dei paesi in via di sviluppo come software per lo sviluppo di informazioni" (dal 2003). In principio CDS/ISIS girava sui computer mainframe di IBM ed è stato scitto alla metà degli anni '70 sotto la direzione/coordinamento di Giampaolo Del Bigio per l'UNESCO's Computerized Documentation Syatem (CDS). Era basato sulle incorporate ISIS (Integrated Set of Information Systems) del Laboratorio Internazionale International Labour Organization di Ginevra. Nel 1985 una versione fu prodotta per mini- e microcomputers scritta in Pascal. Girava su un PC IBM IBM PC con MS-DOS. WINISS, la versione per Windows, per la prima volta mostrata nel 1995, può funzionare su un singolo computer o in rete LAN local area network. Il componente client/server JavaISIS permetteva il collegamento a un DBMS database management remoto via Internet ed era disponibile per Windows, GNU/Linux e Macintosh. Successivamente GenISIS permette di produrre forms Web HTML per ricerche sul database CDS/ISIS. Le ISIS_DLL forniscono le API Application Programming Interface per lo sviluppo di applicativi basati su CDS/ISIS. In Italia è distribuito dalla DBA Associazione per la documentazione le biblioteche e gli archivi. DBA è un'associazione non-profit, nata nel 1990 con lo scopo di diffondere i sistemi informativi per la documentazione, le biblioteche, gli archivi e promuovere ricerche, nuove applicazioni, interventi di formazione.
