- Câmpulung, or Câmpulung Muscel, is a city in the Argeş County, Wallachia, Romania. It is situated among the outlying hills of the Transylvanian Alps, at the head of a long well-wooded glen traversed by the river Târgului, a tributary of the Argeş. Its pure air and fine scenery render Câmpulung a popular summer resort. In the city there are more than twenty churches, besides a monastery and a cathedral, which both claim to have been founded, in the 13th century by Radu Negru, legendary first Prince of Wallachia.

Die reine Luft und die Landschaftsform machen Câmpulung zu einem beliebten sommerlichen Ausflugsziel. In der Stadt gibt es mehr als 20 Kirchen. Außerdem findet man ein Kloster und eine Kathedrale, die beide im 13. Jahrhundert von Radu I. , dem ersten Fürsten der Walachei, gegründet wurden. Bei der Gründung der Stadt haben siebenbürgisch-sächsische Siedler eine entscheidende Rolle gespielt. Sie nannten die Stadt Langenau (lat. Campus Longus). Die siebenbürgisch-sächsische Gemeinschaft konnte sich bis Ende des XVII. Jahrhundert behaupten. Die katholische Kirche (Bărăţia) aus dem XIII. Jahrhundert wurde von ihnen errichtet. Câmpulung war im 13. Jh. die erste Hauptstadt des mittelalterlichen Fürstentum Walachei, gefolgt von Curtea de Argeş im 14. Jahrhundert. Eine wichtige Verkehrsverbindung verläuft durch den 36 Kilometer nördlich gelegenen Törzburg-Pass nach Siebenbürgen. Aus Câmpulung führen Abzweigungen in südlicher Richtung nach Piteşti und Târgovişte. In die Nähe der Stadt findet man auch die Reste einer antiken Siedlung, die wegen ihrer Tore als römisch identifiziert wurde. Die Siedlung, die als Romula, Stepenium oder Ulpia Traiana bekannt war, wird zurzeit "Grădiştea" oder "Jidovi" genannt.
