- Burt Brent is a man of multiple passions and interests ranging from surgery and art to nature and music. He leads an interesting, varied life. His interest in art and compassion for his fellow human being guided him to a career of reconstructive surgery, and his passion for nature resulted in his development as an animal sculptor. As a surgeon, Brent is best known for his work in reconstructing the absent outer ear. He is the first physician to twice receive the coveted James Barrett Brown Award for the best publication in the world literature of Plastic Surgery. He was recently honored as “Clinician of the Year,” a lifetime achievement award from the prestigious American Association of Plastic Surgeons for his work in repairing ear defects in 1,800 children from all over the world. Brent has also received the Award of Excellence four times from the distinguished Society of Animal Artists as well as being three-time recipient of their Memorial Awards for Interpretive Sculpture. He has also received the Members’ Choice Award for “best in show. ” Of further interest, Brent collaborated with famed banjoist Earl Scruggs many years ago to create a landmark banjo instruction book that Burt also illustrated. This tome, "Earl Scruggs and the Five-String Banjo," includes not only banjo instruction and history of the instrument, but also a comprehensive chapter by Brent on the building of his own decorative banjo.
